Publish your Android app on Google Play (with Capacitor)

From the Google developer account to release: prepare your computer, create the app, build and sign the finished Capacitor project in Android Studio, test with real users and submit.

  1. First: Android test app (no Mac, no Android Studio)

    With the provider

    Time: ≈ 15 minutes

    1. Your app code comes with a ready GitHub workflow that builds an installable test app (APK) – free and without a developer account.
    2. Download the app code and unzip it. Create a free GitHub account and install GitHub Desktop.
    3. In GitHub Desktop choose “File → Add local repository”, pick the unzipped folder (confirm creating the repository), then “Publish repository” – keep it private.
    4. On github.com open “Actions” in the repository: the “Android app” run starts by itself. After a few minutes the file “android-app” is ready to download under “Artifacts”.
    5. Open the file on your Android phone, tap the APK and allow installing from this source once. For the Play Store the steps below follow – with developer help.
  2. Create a Google developer account

    With the provider

    Time: ≈ 20 minutes, then Google’s reviewCost: one-time US$25

    1. Open Play Console with your Google Account and choose a personal account or one for an organization.
    2. Have an ID and a payment card in your name ready – Google verifies your identity, which can take a few days.
    3. New personal accounts also verify an Android phone in the Play Console app.
    4. Organizations need a D-U-N-S number.
  3. Prepare your computer

    On your computer

Time: ≈ 30 minutes, mostly downloadCost: free

    1. Download and install Android Studio for free – Java is included.
    2. Open Android Studio once and click through the setup wizard with “Standard”; it downloads the Android SDK.
    3. Install Node.js (LTS). In a terminal, “node -v” then shows a version number of 22 or higher.
    Commands to copy
    node -v
  4. Create the app

    With the provider
    1. “Create app” in Play Console. Copy, images and privacy details come from your launch package.
  5. Build and sign the Android app

    On your computer

    Time: ≈ 20 minutes

    1. Download the app code and unzip it.
    2. WindowsOpen the unzipped folder, type “cmd” into the address bar at the top and press Enter.
    3. MacIn Finder, right-click the folder → “New Terminal at Folder”.
    4. Paste the two commands below – Android Studio opens your finished app.
    5. Choose “Build → Generate Signed App Bundle”, create a new key and keep the key file safe – you need it for every update.
    Commands to copy
    npm install
    npm run android
  6. Test with real users

    With the provider
    1. Open your app in Play Console. Start with an internal test using your signed app bundle (.aab), and try the invitation link on an Android device.
    2. Next, create a closed test, add testers and share the opt-in link. Personal developer accounts created after November 13, 2023 need at least 12 testers continuously opted in for at least 14 days.
    3. Ask testers to check sign-in, navigation, forms and offline behaviour. Collect feedback, fix issues and retest the updated build.
    4. After meeting the requirement, apply for production access in the dashboard and answer the testing questions. Google reviews your application; access is not granted automatically after 14 days.
  7. Submit and release

    With the provider
    1. Upload the bundle to a release track and submit it for review. You control the rollout in Play Console.
